Best Under-Sink Organizers for Small Kitchens

The cabinet under a kitchen sink is the worst-shaped storage in most apartments. There's a drain trap in the middle, a supply line on each side, and sometimes a disposal. The space that's left is an awkward U. Most "under-sink organizer" listings are photographed in empty cabinets, so these picks start with the numbers that decide whether one will fit yours.
These are researched picks. We chose them from manufacturer specs and listing details, not from hands-on testing. When a listing is vague or contradicts itself, we say so.

Measure these four things first
- Door opening width. Measure the gap you actually reach through, not the cabinet's outside. Face frames and hinges often take an inch or more off each side.
- Clear depth. Measure from the back wall to the inside of the closed door. Then check for a door-mounted basket or anything else that hangs inward.
- Height to the lowest pipe. This is usually the bottom of the U-shaped trap. It sets the ceiling for anything placed directly under it.
- Side wall to the drain drop. This is the widest thing that fits beside the pipe. A drain in the center leaves two narrow side zones. A drain to one side leaves one wider zone, which is where a single sliding unit makes sense.
Subtract about 1 inch from each number for clearance. Write the four numbers down before you shop. Every pick below lists the measurements it needs.
Yamazaki Tower Expandable 2-Tier Rack
Best for: Cabinets at least 20" wide inside, with the drain in the middle.
This is a powder-coated steel frame that telescopes from 50 to 85 cm wide (about 19.7" to 33.5"). It is 30 cm (11.8") deep and 35 cm (13.8") tall. The shelf boards are separate pieces, so you leave one out wherever the trap comes down. Shelf height moves in 5.5 cm (about 2.2") steps.
The limit that matters is weight. Yamazaki rates each shelf at about 5 kg, roughly 11 lb. A full gallon of liquid detergent or bleach is close to that by itself, so this is a rack for sprays, sponges and boxes of trash bags, not for jugs. The 11.8" depth is also shallow next to most sink bases. That's a plus if you have a door basket, and a waste if you don't.
What we like
- Width adjusts across a 13.8" range, so it can follow you to the next apartment
- Removable shelf sections go around the trap instead of fighting it
- Steel frame without wobbly plastic joints
Watch out for
- About 11 lb per shelf (per Yamazaki's spec), too light for heavy jugs
- Will not fit a cabinet narrower than about 19.7" inside. The Amazon listing's own spec block is garbled, so check the brand page
Measurements (from the listing)
- Width: 50–85 cm (19.7–33.5")
- Depth: 30 cm (11.8")
- Height: 35 cm (13.8")
- Shelf load: about 5 kg each
- Assembly required
Simple Houseware 2-Tier Sliding Basket
Best for: The strip beside the trap, or a cabinet where only one side is usable.
An 8"-wide wire unit with two pull-out mesh baskets. Overall it's 14" deep and 12.75" tall. The upper basket measures 13.75" × 6.7" × 3.8" and the lower one 14.25" × 6.9" × 3.8". The narrow footprint is the point: it fits in the gap between the trap and the cabinet wall, where nothing else does.
The catch is the 3.8" basket height. Spray bottles stand taller than that, so they rest in the basket with their tops above the rim. That's fine in the bottom basket. In the top one, the listing doesn't say how much clearance there is between tiers, so measure your tallest bottle against 12.75" overall before counting on it. It can sit loose on rubber feet or be screwed down.
What we like
- Very narrow, at 8" wide
- Both baskets slide out, so nothing hides at the back
- Freestanding (no drilling needed in a rental)
Watch out for
- Shallow 3.8" baskets
- No listed clearance between tiers. Measure tall bottles first
Measurements (from the listing)
- Overall: 8" W × 14" D × 12.75" H
- Upper basket: 13.75" D × 6.7" W × 3.8" H
- Lower basket: 14.25" D × 6.9" W × 3.8" H
Simple Houseware Stackable 2-Tier Sliding Organizer
Best for: A drain set to one side, leaving one wider, deeper zone.
This is the bigger sibling: 11" wide, 16.75" deep and 12" tall. The two drawers are different heights. The small one is 2.375" tall (3.75" up to the top panel) and the large one is 4.375". The top panel also holds things, so you effectively get three levels. The listing says no drill or tools are needed.
Depth is the problem. 16.75" is more than many sink bases have clear in front of the pipes, especially once the shutoff valves come off the back wall. Measure from the valves, not the wall. The small drawer only suits flat things like sponges, cloths and dishwasher tablets.
What we like
- Lower drawer fits bottles on their side
- Top panel adds a third surface
- Can stack two units where height allows
Watch out for
- Needs 16.75" of clear depth
- Top drawer is too shallow (2.375") for most bottles
Measurements (from the listing)
- Overall: 11" W × 16.75" D × 12" H
- Drawer width: 8"
- Small drawer 2.375" H; large drawer 4.375" H
Spectrum Grid Over-the-Cabinet-Door Basket (Large)
Best for: Sponges, rubber gloves, a roll of bags. Things that are light and get grabbed daily.
A steel wire basket with padded hooks that slip over the top of a cabinet door. It needs no tools and doesn't damage the door. Amazon lists it for doors up to 0.75" thick. The listings don't agree on which way the dimensions run: Spectrum's site gives 6.5" L × 10.25" W × 13.25" H, while the Amazon listing says 10.25" D × 13.25" W × 6.5" H. Plan for whichever is worse in your cabinet.
A door basket swings into the cabinet when the door closes. If you also put a rack or sliding unit inside, the basket can hit it. Close the door slowly the first time and check.
What we like
- No tools, no holes
- Uses space that is otherwise empty
- Open wire, so you can see what is inside
Watch out for
- Conflicting dimensions between listings
- Takes several inches of depth from whatever sits behind the door
Measurements (from the listing)
- Fits doors up to 0.75" thick (Amazon listing)
- About 13.25" × 10.25" × 6.5", orientation varies by listing
OXO Good Grips 11" Turntable
Best for: The back corners, where bottles go to be forgotten.
An 11"-diameter, 1.5"-tall turntable with a raised ledge, non-slip feet and a wide fixed base. Because of the base, the spinning top doesn't scrape the cabinet wall. Retailers list the usable top at about 9.25" across. It's a simple fix for a cabinet that has depth but no width: spin it, and the bottle from the back comes to the front.
A circle in a rectangular corner wastes the corners, and it needs a full 11" × 11" of clear floor. A wet bottle on it will also drip into the ledge, so wipe it now and then.
What we like
- Reaches the back of deep cabinets
- Doesn't drift on non-slip feet
- Wide base keeps the top off the walls
Watch out for
- Round shape leaves dead corners
- Needs an 11" square of floor clear of pipes
Measurements (from the listing)
- 11" diameter × 1.5" H
- About 9.25" usable surface
- OXO SKU 1071352
How we picked
We started from the measurements that decide fit under a sink: width, depth, height and weight limit. We kept only products whose brand or listing page states them. Where two sources disagree, we print both. We did not test these items. Read how we pick for the details.
FAQ
Do I need to drill into a rental cabinet?
No. Every pick here can stand freely or hang on the door. Some can be screwed down for stability, but that is optional.
What if my cabinet has a garbage disposal?
A disposal takes most of the middle and hangs lower than a trap. Use the narrow 8" sliding basket on one side and a door basket. A full-width rack usually won't fit.
Where should heavy jugs go?
On the cabinet floor, in front of the trap. Don't put them on a shelf rated around 11 lb.
