In a small apartment, the back of a door is often the last empty surface. Over-the-door storage uses it without a single screw in the wall, which matters when you want your security deposit back. The catch is that doors vary more than the listings admit. Many over-door hooks are made for a 1-3/8" door, and older apartment doors are often thicker. A rack that sticks out 7" can also stop a closet door from opening all the way.

So these picks are sorted by the three numbers that decide fit: how thick your door is, how much room there is behind it, and how tall the rack hangs. These are researched picks, chosen from listing and brand specs, not hands-on tests. Where a listing contradicts itself, we say so. (For pantry doors in particular, see our pantry organizer guide.)

Measure your door first

  1. Door thickness. Put a tape measure across the top edge of the door. Write down the number to the nearest eighth of an inch. This rules products in or out faster than anything else. The picks below range from hooks that fit only up to 1-3/8" to a bracket that takes 1-3/8" to 2-1/4".
  2. The gap above the closed door. The hooks sit between the top of the door and the frame. Close the door and look at the gap. If it's very tight, the door may not latch with hooks in it.
  3. Clear space behind the door. With the door open as far as it goes, measure from the door to the wall, doorstop or shelf it swings toward. A rack's depth plus whatever you put in it has to fit there.
  4. Height and knob position. Measure the door's height and the distance from the top of the door down to the knob. Tall racks run past the knob, and some hang low enough that the bottom row is near the floor.
  5. Door width. The widest pick here is about 21.7". The narrowest is 12.33".

Leave about 1 inch of slack on width and depth. If the door is your apartment's main entry door, check your building's rules before hanging anything on it.

Best Overall

Simple Houseware 24-Pocket Clear Over-the-Door Organizer

Best for: A bathroom or closet door that needs to hold lots of small, light things.

A fabric panel 19" wide and 64" tall with 24 clear plastic pockets, each 4.3" wide and 9.5" tall. The top row gets an extra 2 inches for bigger items. It hangs from four metal hooks and is rated to 40 lb. Empty, the listing puts it at 0.5" deep, so it adds almost nothing behind the door until the pockets are full.

It's sold as a shoe organizer, but the listing itself says the pockets suit "slim shoes, small-size sneakers, flats, sandals, and heels". At 4.3" wide, a lot of adult sneakers won't go in. In a small apartment it's more useful for what else fits: sunscreen and spare toiletries on a bathroom door, sponges and spray bottles on a closet door, chargers and gloves near the entry. The bigger limit is the hooks. They fit doors up to 1-3/8" thick. If your door is thicker, the hooks won't sit flat and the door may not close. On a standard 80" door, a 64" panel ends about 16" above the floor (a little lower once you count the hooks), so the bottom row is low.

What we like

  • Very shallow when empty (about 0.5")
  • Rated to 40 lb across four hooks
  • Clear pockets, so nothing gets lost

Watch out for

  • The included hooks fit doors only up to 1-3/8" thick
  • Pockets are 4.3" wide, too narrow for many adult sneakers
  • The bottom row sits low, about 16" off the floor on an 80" door

Measurements (from the listing)

  • Overall: 19" W × 64" H
  • Pockets: 4.3" W × 9.5" H (top row about 2" taller)
  • 24 pockets, 4 metal hooks
  • Doors up to 1-3/8" thick
  • Capacity: 40 lb

Best for Shoes

Whitmor 36-Pair Over-the-Door Shoe Rack

Best for: Full-size sneakers and everyday shoes, on a closet door with room behind it.

A metal frame with 12 angled shelves and a mesh back that stops shoes from sliding through. Amazon lists it at 21.63" wide, 7.5" deep and 69" tall, and says it's 74" tall including the hooks. Whitmor's own page gives the same 7.5" × 21.63" × 69" for this design. It can hang over the door or mount on a wall, and the listing says the hooks adjust to different doors, though it doesn't publish a thickness range.

Two numbers deserve attention. First, 74" with hooks on an 80" door leaves roughly 6" to 8" at the bottom, depending on how far the hooks drop, so it covers almost the whole door. Check that the knob doesn't get in the way. Second, 7.5" is deep. With shoes on it, it can hit a closet shelf or keep the door from opening flat against a wall, and some reviewers say exactly that. "36 pairs" is also optimistic: several reviewers with adult sizes report fitting closer to 24 pairs. Assembly takes a while; reviewers mention 30 to 45 minutes, mostly threading the mesh onto the bars.

What we like

  • Shelves take full-size shoes, not just flats
  • Mesh back keeps shoes in and protects the door
  • Can be wall-mounted later if the door doesn't work

Watch out for

  • 7.5" deep plus the shoes; it can stop the door opening fully
  • Realistic capacity for adult shoes is closer to 24 pairs, per reviewers
  • No published door-thickness range; assembly takes 30+ minutes

Measurements (from the listing)

  • 21.63" W × 7.5" D × 69" H (74" H with hooks)
  • 12 shelves
  • Over the door or wall-mounted
  • Whitmor model 6037-7037 (white version)

Best for Thick Doors

Spectrum Windsor Over-the-Door 6 Double Hook Rack

Best for: Coats, towels and bags on a thick or old door that other hooks won't fit.

A steel rack with six double hooks, so 12 places to hang things. The bracket fits doors from 1-3/8" to 2-1/4" thick, which covers the heavy, thick doors in many older buildings. The listing gives a 35 lb maximum. There's no assembly: it goes straight over the door.

The listing can't agree on its own size. One bullet says 12.5" × 19.75" × 4.25" deep, the description says 6.5" deep × 20.5" wide × 12.5" tall, and the spec table says 20.5" × 5" × 12.5". Plan for the 6.5" depth to be safe. Because it hangs from the top of the door, the hooks end up roughly 5½ to 6½ feet off the floor on a standard 80" door, which is a reach for some people. And the adjustable bracket is a trade-off: on a standard 1-3/8" door it's at the loose end of its range. Reviewers of the older chrome version mention it shifting when the door moves and scuffing paint on the frame. A bit of felt on the bracket would help.

What we like

  • Fits doors 1-3/8" to 2-1/4" thick
  • 12 hanging spots in about 20" of width
  • No tools and no assembly

Watch out for

  • Listed depth ranges from 4.25" to 6.5" depending on where you read
  • Can shift on thinner doors; reviewers mention scuffed frames
  • Hooks sit high, around 5½ to 6½ feet up

Measurements (from the listing)

  • About 20" W × 12.5" H
  • Depth: 4.25" to 6.5" (listing disagrees)
  • Doors 1-3/8" to 2-1/4" thick
  • Max weight: 35 lb (listing)
  • Spectrum model 63324 (bronze)

VyGrow 12.3" W Narrow 8-Tier Over-the-Door Organizer

Best for: A narrow bathroom or closet door, for toiletries, cleaning supplies or snacks.

We also picked this one for our pantry guide, and it's just as useful outside the kitchen. It's a metal frame with eight adjustable baskets, 12.33" wide, 4.72" deep and 62.9" tall. The listing says the hook fits doors up to about 1.9" thick and recommends more than 5.5" of clearance behind the door. VyGrow's 12.3"-wide models are listed for doors about 16" and wider, so it suits the narrow bathroom and linen-closet doors in older apartments, where the wider racks here won't fit.

The baskets are shallow, so think bottles, rolls and boxes of bags, not bath towels. At 62.9" it runs most of the way down a standard door, so check where the knob lands before you order.

What we like

  • Narrow 12.33" frame for doors about 16" and wider
  • Only 4.72" deep
  • Eight baskets that move up and down

Watch out for

  • 62.9" tall, so check the knob position
  • Shallow baskets; bulky items lean or fall

Measurements (from the listing)

  • 12.33" W × 4.72" D × 62.9" H
  • 8 baskets
  • Doors up to about 1.9" thick
  • Recommended clearance behind the door: over 5.5"

CHJgroup Over-the-Door Clothes Hanger Rod

Best for: Tiny closets: tomorrow's outfit, dry cleaning, or laundry drying on hangers.

Most over-door storage is hooks or baskets. This adds an actual rod, so clothes can hang on hangers. It's a metal rod on two arms, plus two extra hooks in the version we picked. The listing gives 17.7" × 10" × 10.7" and says it fits doors up to 1.97" thick and holds up to 22 lb. You put it together with the included screws and screwdriver. Nothing gets screwed into the door.

The 22 lb limit is the main thing to respect: that's a handful of shirts or a couple of winter coats, not a full rail. Expect the arms to stick out about 10" from the door, more with clothes on it, so it suits a door that doesn't need to open flat against a wall. For more ways to fit clothes into a tiny closet, see our small-closet organizer guide. It's also a lesser-known brand, and the Amazon listing is the only spec source we could find.

What we like

  • Real hanging rod for clothes on hangers
  • Fits doors up to 1.97" thick
  • Two extra hooks for bags or towels

Watch out for

  • 22 lb limit
  • Sticks out about 10" from the door
  • Only the listing publishes specs; no brand site found

Measurements (from the listing)

  • 17.7" × 10" × 10.7"
  • Doors up to 1.97" thick
  • Capacity: 22 lb
  • Assembly with included screws (none into the door)

How we picked

We started with the measurements that decide whether over-door storage works in a rental: door thickness, depth behind the door, height and weight limit. We kept only products whose listing or brand page states them, and only listings that were in stock when we checked. Several well-known towel racks and closet valets were dropped because their Amazon listings were unavailable. Where a listing contradicts itself, we print both numbers. We did not test these items. See how we pick.

FAQ

Will an over-the-door organizer damage a rental door?

Hooks over the top don't need holes, but metal can rub paint off the top edge or the frame. A strip of felt or clear bumper tape on the hooks helps. Adhesive pads that some racks include can leave residue, so try one in a hidden spot first.

My door won't close with the hooks on it. What now?

The hooks are too thick for the gap above the door, or too narrow for the door. Measure the door's thickness and buy hooks rated for it. The Spectrum rack covers 1-3/8" to 2-1/4".

How thick is a standard interior door?

Many are 1-3/8", which is what the Simple Houseware hooks are made for. Older and solid doors are often thicker, so measure yours instead of assuming.

What about cabinet doors?

Cabinet doors are much thinner. Use a basket made for them, like the Spectrum over-the-cabinet basket in our under-sink guide.
